Steven Perian KC prosecutes murder case resulting in life sentence

September 29, 2026

Steven Perian KC, leading Grace Ong, prosecuted the trial of Abdou Sillah at Birmingham Crown Court. Sillah was convicted of the murder of 29-year-old Kiirpal Nhian and of possessing a knife in a public place.

On 28 September 2026, Sillah was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 22 years.

The case concerned the fatal stabbing of Mr Nhian at a property in Swanage Road, Birmingham. He suffered 28 sharp-force injuries, including three penetrating wounds to the chest which caused his death. The sentencing judge found that, whatever the circumstances at the beginning of the confrontation, they could not justify the degree of violence which followed.

Mr Nhian had experienced considerable adversity before coming to the United Kingdom. Having fled civil war and endured detention and severe mistreatment in Libya, he had begun rebuilding his life here. The Court heard that he wanted to work, support his family and build a new and peaceful life.

In his sentencing remarks, His Honour Judge Richard Bond described Mr Nhian’s death as a “needless tragedy which should never have happened” and the offence as the “senseless taking of a human life”.

Steven Perian KC and Grace Ong were instructed by CPS West Midlands.
