GP jailed for indecently assaulting patients – Chris Hewertson led Harper Marshall for the Crown

October 7, 2024

Stephen Cox, 65, denied 16 counts of indecent assault against seven women while practising in Bracknell, Berkshire, between 1988 and 1997, but he was convicted of 12 charges against seven victims.

A jury was discharged in an earlier trial in March 2023 after failing to reach verdicts on seven counts.  Following this, some of his victims came forward to complain about Mr Cox’s behaviour after hearing or reading about police action against him on the radio and in local newspapers, decades after he had abused them.

It can now be reported that Mr Cox was earlier barred from practising as a doctor for nine months in October 2010.

Regulators found that he had acted inappropriately and in a “sexually motivated” way with multiple other women while working at a practice in Handcross, West Sussex.

Mr Cox was remanded in custody and will be sentenced at Reading Crown Court on Monday 7th October 2024.

UPDATE: Stephen Cox was jailed for 22 years at Reading Crown Court on 7th October 2024.  Judge Sarah Campbell said Cox was the “worst kind of sexual predator” and had assaulted vulnerable women he thought would be less likely to complain.
