
Overview
Tim Clark is an experienced and highly sought-after criminal law specialist. As a KC, Tim is regularly instructed in multi-handed murder and serious fraud matters. He has been instructed in a number of cases involving representing professionals charged with criminal offences, including solicitors and accountants.
Prior to taking silk in 2017, Tim was instructed in over twenty murder trials as leading junior, junior or junior alone as well as in cases involving serious fraud and sexual offences. He is regularly in demand for cases of complexity and weight, including MTIC and corporate fraud.

Tim secured acquittals of murder in six consecutive murder trials as King’s Counsel, all of which occurred in 2018-19.
In 2020 Tim was briefed in several high profile multi-handed murders including R v Jamie Chandler, where he represented a 15-year-old accused of a double murder at a house party in Milton Keynes, he has also achieved an acquittal on all counts for a Romanian businessman in a two month multi-handed modern slavery trial.
In 2021 Tim continued to be involved in high profile multi-handed murders and received instructions to defend one of ten defendants (a chartered accountant) in Operation Centrum, involving alleged excise duty and VAT fraud involving a loss to the Revenue of at least £20m.
In 2022, Tim was instructed in two of the longest and most high profile multihanded murder trials that year. He continued to receive private instructions to defend both in the Court of Appeal and in a rape trial in North Wales.
In 2023, Tim was instructed to defend in a lengthy murder trial involving the use of Encrochat evidence, this included detailed arguments relating to the admissibility of evidence obtained from the police in France, Holland and the UAE. He continued to be instructed in lengthy multi-handed murder trials. He spent two months in Chester Crown Court defending in a multihanded building fraud matter. In September he was instructed to prosecute in Operation Fanbelt, a major, eight year investigation, into fraud and money laundering. He was instructed by the CPS Serious Economic, Organised Crime International Directorate.
Prior to taking silk in 2017, Tim was instructed to prosecute Operations Kernow & Fustuscaro – complex multi-handed cash for crash matters.
He was also instructed to represent a number of solicitors charged with conveyancing fraud – all of whom were acquitted.

R v EE (2023)
Tim is instructed to represent a man accused of conspiring to murder two men. This is a trial expected to last several months and involves evidence from the Encrochat system.

R v Rizwan Gul (2022)
Tim, leading Sasha Queffurus, represented Mr Gul in a four month murder trial. Tim’s client was first on the indictment in this ten handed trial. The case involved extensive telephone evidence, CCTV material and over twenty eyewitnesses. -
R v XX (2020-2021)
Tim was instructed in this six handed murder listed for two months at Basildon Crown Court involving complex issues of telephone cell site and DNA expert evidence. Tim is instructed by Berkeley Square Solicitors -
R v Jamie Chandler (2019-2020)
Tim was instructed – leading Madeleine Wolfe – to defend in this high profile nine week trial of a double murder occurring at a house party in Milton Keyes. Tim’s lay client was 15 years old, Tim has frequently been instructed to represent youths in murders.
Financial, Corporate Crime and Financial Regulation
Prior to taking silk, Tim was instructed to prosecute Operations Kernow & Fustuscaro – complex multi-handed cash for crash matters. He was also instructed to represent a number of solicitors charged with conveyancing fraud – all of whom were acquitted.
He is regularly in demand for cases of complexity and weight, including MTIC and corporate fraud.
Tim has been instructed to represent companies and company directors in large scale prosecutions by Trading Standards.

R v ZZ (2020-2023)
Tim is instructed to defend a chartered accountant in Operation Centrum – a ten handed investigation into alleged diversion fraud and VAT fraud apparently costing the Revenue at least £20m. Tim is regularly asked to represent professionals charged with fraud.

R v CD & X Ltd (2018)
Tim was instructed as QC to represent a director of a large double-glazing firm prosecuted for Fraud and Unfair Trading by Trading Standards at Stoke Crown Court. Tim negotiated a settlement which led to financial penalties only and no Confiscation proceeding being brought. Tim was instructed by Will Southcott of Ashcotts solicitors -
R v GG (2016-2017)
Tim was instructed to represent the director of a marketing company who outsourced mass telesales activities to India, the director was domiciled in Dubai. Trading Standards prosecuted the director for Unfair Trading at York Crown Court. Tim was instructed by Alexander Bennett solicitors. -
R v VV [2017]
(leading Rhodri James). Tim acted as Queen’s Counsel for an accountant accused of criminal involvement in a £44 million VAT fraud. The defendant Tim represented was the accountant for nearly the whole existence of two “umbrella” companies which provided salary services to several large temporary employment agencies. The defendant signed off a number of VAT returns which reported the VAT due at about 10% of what it was later established should have been paid. The defendant gave evidence that he was only as good as the information he received from his clients and blamed them for any criminal activity which occurred. The co-defendants were all convicted, VW was acquitted of all counts. The case involved over 80,000 pages of evidence and the trial lasted two months, gaining considerable national news coverage: -

Representing defendant charged in a £100 million MTIC fraud (Operation Vex) at Southwark Crown Court. Defendant director of Freight Forwarding Company. -

Leading Junior in defence in Fuel Oil Revenue Fraud at Leeds Crown Court – two month trial. Defendant alleged shadow director of Oil Company involved in theft and revenue avoidance. -

Leading Junior in defence of former recruitment manager at Railtrack/National Rail accused of fraudulent trading involving insider knowledge. -
