Luton man convicted of ‘One Punch s18 GBH’ – Matilda Robinson-Murphy prosecuted for the Crown

James Lawson was charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent on the Victim, who suffered a bleed on the brain. Due to the Victim requiring induction into a coma, this was a victimless prosecution.
The issue for trial was whether the mechanism of the assault, it being one punch alone, could constitute ‘intention to cause really serious harm’ and not the alternative offence under section 20 of the Offences against the Person Act 1861.
The jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict to grievous bodily harm with intent after a trial at Huntingdon Crown Court.
Matilda was instructed by Thames & Chiltern CPS.
